The legislative agenda for the next Congress was already jammed when the credit crisis hit in late September.  Now issues that once looked imperative face the challenge of getting a decent hearing, let alone adequate funding in what shapes up as a radically altered financial environment.

We at 720 Strategies believe that the remaining months of 2008 are an essential time to recruit, enlist, and ready grassroots supporters for the battles of 2009.  Popular interest in public affairs continues to rise, as it has throughout the campaign cycle.  Voter registrations and debate audiences are setting records.  Videos of the presidential candidates have been viewed on YouTube nearly one hundred million times.

Next year’s winners won’t necessarily be the causes with the loudest, or even the biggest number, of supporters.  Instead, successful advocacy will hinge on delivering the right people to make the best case before the key decision-makers at the pivotal moments in the legislative process. Supporters for your brand and agenda are tuned into politics right now, as anxious citizens getting ready to vote.  This is the time to start preparing them for what will happen after November 4.

Forget voter fatigue.  For 2009, it’s game on.
